In the early stages, the only option to install the PV module was to attach pre-drilled module rails to the mount holes on the back of PV module frames with nuts and bolts. But when access the back of the array, it is not practical with an array that is flush-mounted to a roof. Thus, "top-down mount" methods, which hold modules in place with clamps, became the standard. Tightened down from the front, these clamps hold the module frames against the rails. However, both of these mounting methods require long rails. For reducing mounting system cost, an increasing number of PV mount manufacturers now offer "rail-less" mounting systems.

 

As the name implies, the Rail-less structure mainly means a roof mounting system for installing photovoltaic (PV) modules on a roof structure comprises a base mount assembly that engages with a clamp assembly and attaches to the roof structure. The base mount assembly comprises a base member having a waterproof means, a block slider, a top slider and a covering means. An elevated seal portion of a block slider includes a borehole to receive the waterproof means. A vertical engaging portion of the block slider is attached with a sliding seal member of the top slider. The clamp assembly includes a clamp member and a plate member and the clamp member is attached with a track of the top slider.
